Fern Rhey Barnard Mixdorf, 93, of Cedar Falls, was born on January 11, 1919 in Waterloo. She was the daughter of Harley and Mary Thompson Barnard. Fern attended school in Waterloo and graduated from West High School in 1937. She married Forrest G. Mixdorf in 1945.
Fern devoted her life to caring for her husband and children as a homemaker. She was a great cook who is remembered for her cinnamon rolls and desserts. She also enjoyed fishing, ice skating and crocheting, and had a good sense of humor. Fern was a member of the Cedar #30 Odd Fellows Lodge and Happy Thought Rebekah Lodge, Eastern Star, Mason's and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Fern died while a resident of New Aldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls of natural causes. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Mixdorf and a brother, Maurice Barnard. Fern is survived by her husband of 66 years, Forrest, of Cedar Falls; a son, Glen Mixdorf, of Everett, WA; a daughter, Nancy Mixdorf, of Davenport; a granddaughter, Stacey Mixdorf of Columbus, OH and a brother, Francis (Mary) Barnard of McMinville, OR.
As a show of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1301 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, IA 50702.
