Euterpa "Terp" Mae Hagedorn Thomas, 92, of Waterloo, was born on August 2, 1919 in Garwin, Iowa. She was the daughter of August H. and Vinta May Ross Hagedorn. Terp graduated from Traer High School in 1938 and married John R. Thomas in Ft. Collins, CO on July 18, 1939. John and Terp made their life in Traer until John's health forced them to move to Waterloo in 1997. John died on September 17, 2002 and Terp continued living in their home until moving to Friendship Village in 2005.
Terp spent her life totally devoted to her family. A great cook who is remembered as making excellent fruit pies, she loved caring for her family. Terp was the eternal optimist who enjoyed traveling and had a strong faith in God. She was a longtime active member of Ripley United Church of Christ in Traer where she was a member of Homebuilders. She was also an associate member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. Terp was a 55 year member of PEO Chapter EC in Traer and Chapter LO in Waterloo. She was loved and respected by all she knew.
Terp died of natural causes on Thursday, February 2, 2012, exactly six months after her 92nd birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and a daughter, Paula Ewing Lehmeier. Terp is survived by her daughters, Suzanne (Duane) Lewis of Waterloo, Candace Thomas Kless of Geneva, IL and Cheri (Gary) Cederlund of Waterloo; a son, John Thomas of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Chappell of Evansdale, Barbara Dedic of Traer and Betty (Allen) Gibson of Raymond and a brother, Rex (Lavere) Hagedorn.
As a show of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Ripley United Church of Christ.
