Beatrice O. Paulson was born on February 9, 1914 on a farm near Highlandville, Winneshiek County, Iowa: the daughter of Charles and Eliza (Rustad) Nelson. She married Melvin Smithling in Cresco on September 30, 1929; he preceded her in death on May 13, 1965. Beatrice was united in marriage to Raymond Paulson in Waterloo on December 4, 1969; he preceded her in death on December 18, 1991. She worked at Sears in the Drapery Department for 26 years, retiring in 1977. Beatrice joined First Lutheran Church in 1953, where she was active in Ruth's Circle and Ladies Aid. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, bingo and going to the casino.
Beatrice passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Denver Sunset Home from natural causes at the age of 97. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands; two sons: Dennis and Harlan Smithling; two grandsons: Gregory and Barry Smithling; a great-grandson; a brother Charles Nelson and 4 sisters: Agnes Spilde, Evelyn Haugen, Clarice Gilbertson and Gladys Hieken. Beatrice is survived by a daughter Mary (Craig) Rains of San Diego, California; a daughter-in-law Georgia Smithling of Waverly; 10 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and three sisters: Marion Fritz of Minnesota, Florence Lynch of Decorah and Darlene Rugland of Minnesota. Beatrice will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
